A couple of days ago, I talked about how Neem is one of the most useful herbs for alleviating chronic, stubborn skin ailments such as eczema & recurring diaper rashes. It has been traditionally referred to as the “Village Pharmacy” or the “Panacea for all Diseases” in ancient ayurvedic texts and modern science has corroborated its effectiveness on skin conditions that often fail to respond to classical treatment.
Today, I am going to focus on another traditional remedy that has achieved mainstream scientific validation as a potent skin healer. Coconut oil, long maligned as a bad fat, is now recognized as a truly spectacular oil with numerous health and skin benefits. It is easily absorbed and contains caprylic acid and some of the largest amounts of lauric acid, giving it powerful antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Combined with deep moisturizing capabilities, coconut oil becomes extremely effective in soothing the discomfort associated with diaper rashes, eczema flare-ups, and allergic skin reactions.
According to Dr. Audrey Kunin, a board certified dermatologist, “Virgin coconut oil has an amazing ability to fight free-radical damage, presumably because it is rich in ferulic and p-coumaric acid…Applied topically, it has been shown to be useful in wound healing.” In a study on atopic dermatitis sufferers, it was also revealed that applying coconut oil twice a day decreased bacterial colonization (staphylococcus aureus) by 95%, and in another double-blind randomized control study of 117 children carried out over 8 weeks in 2013, coconut oil proved to be significantly effective in improving eczema symptoms. In addition, it has been found to :
- Kill fungi and yeasts that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, and other infections.
- Reduce inflammation.
- Support tissue healing and repair.
- Support the natural chemical balance of the skin
- Soften skin and help relieve excessive dryness and flaking.
- Prevent wrinkles, sagging skin, and age spots.
- Promote healthy looking hair and complexion.
You already know from my previous blog post that organic Neem is a primary ingredient in our USDA certified organic Intensive Baby Balm. Another primary ingredient is organic Virgin Coconut Oil, and together these 2 ingredients provide the most powerful, effective, gentle and natural defense against extra-dry, sensitive/inflamed skin, recurring diaper rashes and itchy eczema flare-ups.
Nicole, an early adopter from Maryland, claims that her toddler refers to the balm as the “itchy balm” because it miraculously (her word) soothes any itch, big or small; and red, rashy patches disappear after only a couple of applications.
