Preventing stretch marksWe recently shared tips to help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. But what happens if you get them anyway? There are a few ways to treat and minimize existing stretch marks. And if doing so naturally is important to you, you’re in luck.

 

As stretch marks fade, they can become faint and silvery. But others stay dark and quite noticeable. The best time to treat stretch marks is when they’re still red and new. For many women, stretch marks are the result of pregnancy, when the belly expands faster than the skin can stretch. The result is the tearing and breaking of fibers just beneath the surface of the skin, and ultimately, that striating scar. But if you’re going to treat stretch marks as soon as you get them – which is when treatments will be most effective – and you’re still pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s absolutely essential that you do so in a manner that won’t harm your baby. Let’s go over the typical treatment options.

 

Retinoids
A common stretch mark treatment is the active form of vitamin A, known as a retinoid, derived from animals. Topical and oral retinoids are used for a variety of skin conditions thanks to their ability to speed up cell division and stimulate new collagen growth for healthier skin. But in several studies, high doses of vitamin A during pregnancy had a negative impact on the developing baby, and oral retinoids are known to cause birth defects.

Laser Treatments
There are also in-office treatments in which lasers are used to heat the skin. The goal is boosted collagen growth and a reduction in dilated blood vessels. But multiple visits are often necessary and the procedure can be quite expensive. Results are spotty as well, and laser treatments should not be performed until after delivery. Not only is it unsafe for your developing baby, your belly is going to keep growing – meaning more stretch marks are very likely.

Bottom line – not safe during pregnancy
