Spotlight Series – The (Many) Benefits of Coconut Oil: |

Coconut oil works wonders on and in the body. See what we love best, and why it’s a main ingredient in our intensive baby balm.Coconut oil has enjoyed its time in the spotlight for the last few years as a health and beauty magic bullet. And it’s wholly deserved! There are literally over one hundred uses for this wonderful oil – everything from cooking and baking to massage and the best-ever intensive hair mask. But it’s the moisturizing and restorative properties of coconut oil that we love the most, which is why you’ll find it as a main ingredient in our Intensive Baby Balm.

Coconut oil is derived via several methods. The two main manufacturing processes include cold-pressing, which involves quick-drying the coconut meat and mechanically pressing out the oil, and wet-milling, in which the oil is extracted without drying first. This is accomplished by expressing the coconut milk and then separating the oil through boiling, enzymes, mechanical centrifuge or fermentation.

Some brands of coconut oil are labeled as “virgin,” and while there’s no industry standard for this term, it generally refers to oil that has not been overly processed. Specifically, it hasn’t been bleached, hydrogenated, deodorized or refined. Whether you’re using it on or in your body, make sure to look for pure, organic coconut oil – there shouldn’t be anything else on the ingredient list.

Coconut oil is a wonderfully unique substance. It’s solid and an opaque white at room temperature, but melts into a clear oil above 75º F. It can be used and stored in either form, and it can be applied topically or ingested for many different benefits. No matter how you use it, the benefits are impressive.

• Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal.

• It can speed up wound healing time and prevent infections thanks to a hefty dose of fatty acids. Taken internally, these same fatty acids can boost immunity and energy levels.

• Coconut oil is also high in vitamin E, which is essential for healthy skin growth and repair. It also fights premature aging and wrinkling of the skin.

• Studies have shown that coconut oil improves skin barrier function for those dealing with atopic dermatitis.

• It can improve the skin’s moisture and lipid content. It’s also effective in reducing water loss in the skin because of its superior absorption.

• It eliminates flaky, dead skin.

• It has a softening and calming effect on inflamed and allergic skin.

• It’s soothing to bug bites and rashes.

• It protects against sun damage and acts as an antioxidant, preventing cellular aging.

All this – and it smells incredible too. How could we not include it in our organic Intensive Baby Balm? Our balm is a soothing and nourishing solution for sensitive, dry, irritated skin, and coconut oil is one of the main ingredients. We paired it with neem, plantain, shea butter and other powerful botanical ingredients to provide instant relief from diaper rash and skin flare-ups. Skip the toxic cocktail that makes up so many conventional products on the market today – even those intended specifically for the delicate skin of babies and small children – and use something that is as gentle as it is effective. Just like coconut oil itself.
